1. What Are Stablecoins? Why Do We Need Them

Stablecoin = cryptocurrency pegged to fiat money. 1 USDT ≈ 1 USD, with a nearly fixed price.

Crypto needs stablecoins for three reasons:

  • Hedging: Bitcoin dropping 10% in a day is routine — converting to USDT locks in value.
  • Medium of exchange: nearly all coins are priced and traded in USDT — it’s crypto’s “dollar.”
  • On/off-ramp: fiat is first converted to USDT before buying other coins on exchanges.

2. What Is USDT? How Issuance Works

USDT is issued by Tether, which claims every 1 USDT is backed by 1 USD (or equivalent assets) in reserve. Users give dollars to Tether; Tether issues USDT. Redemptions work in reverse.

Key facts:

  • Issuer: Tether Limited
  • First issued: 2014
  • Market cap: consistently top three in crypto
  • Main networks: TRC20 (Tron), ERC20 (Ethereum), BEP20 (BSC)

3. USDT vs USDC: Key Differences

Item USDT USDC
Issuer Tether Circle
Transparency Quarterly reserve reports Monthly audits + real-time reserves
Compliance Relatively loose Strict US compliance
Liquidity Highest, most trading pairs Slightly lower
Use cases Trading, transfers Compliance, DeFi

Beginner advice: use USDT on exchanges (best liquidity); for large long-term holdings, consider USDC (higher transparency).

4. Stablecoin Risks: Depeg Events Reviewed

Stablecoins are not 100% safe. History has seen several “depegs” (price falling below $1):

  • May 2022, UST collapse: algorithmic stablecoin UST fell from $1 to pennies, wiping out $40 billion in market cap. The most painful lesson — algorithmic stablecoins ≠ fiat-backed stablecoins.
  • March 2023, USDC depeg: Silicon Valley Bank collapsed with $3.3 billion of Circle’s reserves inside; USDC briefly fell to $0.87 before recovering days later.

The lesson: only use mainstream fiat-backed stablecoins (USDT/USDC); stay away from algorithmic stablecoins.

5. How Beginners Use Stablecoins

  • Deposit: buy USDT via P2P — that’s step one.
  • Trade: use USDT to buy BTC, ETH, and other coins.
  • Withdraw: sell back to USDT, then convert to fiat via P2P (see the withdrawal tutorial).
  • Pick the right network for transfers: TRC20 has the lowest fees (~1 USDT); ERC20 is the most expensive (tens of USDT). Beginners should prefer TRC20.

6. FAQ

Could USDT collapse?

Tether is one of crypto’s biggest companies — the odds are extremely low. But it has been fined over reserve opacity, so don’t keep your entire net worth in USDT.

Can USDT and USD be freely exchanged?

In theory 1:1, but the threshold for redeeming through Tether directly is high for regular users (minimum $100,000). Day-to-day, just buy and sell via exchange P2P.

Can USDT on different networks be transferred between each other?

Not directly. USDT on TRC20 sent to an ERC20 address will be lost. Always confirm both sides use the same network before transferring.
